How much calcium should a adult take daily?

You need to have your minerals in balance, so besides calcium, you should be taking a magnesium supplement also.  If you are drinking milk, 2 or 3 8 oz glasses a day are good.  Magnesium is not in a lot of foods (it's high in almonds and buckwheat), so I find it's easier to take a supplement.

You should be able to find a magnesium/calcium supplement because these two minerals are known to work together.  If you are looking at an age of bone loss, at least 1 gm (or 1,000 mg) of each is a good amount.

I have entered into menopause myself.  Having been a big milk drinker (at least a quart a day) for all of my life, I have pretty strong bones - at least that's what I've been told when I've gone for bone density scans (my readings are off the charts on the good side).

On calcium and magnesium - if you want to get them from foods, the best source for both is bone broth that you make yourself from chicken, beef or pork bones.

It's the most bioavailable form for all minerals.
