what happened when he was playing st. stephen i heard he just decided to stop playing in the middle of the song and refused to play ever again until he was bugged by bobby and other members of the band... does anyone know if this is true and if this even happened?
There was a concert in 1971 when, having been infuriated by Garcia's decision to play "St Stephen" at a point in the show which they believe clearly to have been inappropriate, the drummers went into the set closer which was "Not Fade Away" in a way which made the rest of the band have to follow them.
Could this be what you are referring to?
