There are many things you can do for cholesterol. first off you must know that cholesterol is made in the liver and is natural. But of course if you have too much, it can become a problem. Appox. 95% of all ingested fats are triglycerides. Even though our bodies needs cholesterol to make hormones and deal with stress and trauma, the wrong ratio of cholesterol types can pose a problem.
HDL, the supposed good cholesterol is actually the transporter(high-density lipoprotein) just as LDL(low density lipoprotein), bad cholesterol, is also a transporter. LDL brings cholesterol and triglycerides from the liver and out to the body putting the circulatory system at risk. HDL brings fat back to the liver to be processed and excreted or used. If one has too much LDL over HDL, then it becomes a dangerous ratio for heart disease. This is in part due to the Standard American Diet(SAD) that has too much saturated fats and not enough unsaturated fats. And our brains and nerve system as well as our very cell membranes need EFA's, essential fatty acids, from good oils/fats. Therefore, diet is absolutely important. But so is lifestyle and stress reduction.
One thing you can do is increase your HDL, good cholesterol by including unsaturated fats (increase HDL) with Omegas(3/6/9) in your diet. Esp. Omega-3 fatty acids. They include avocado/safflower/coconut/fish/flaxseed and especially most importantly olive oil. Flax is one of the best ways to get Omegas and has the highest concentrates of it. Olive oil is best to use when cooking or with salads. If you like the taste of flax oil, it's good in salads and over food. Otherwise seeds ground or in meal is good in salads or porridge. Cold water fish oil(omega 3/6/9) are good in capsules. Fresh cold/deepwater fish is good to eat on occasion but one must watch out for the heavy metals in them so capsules are a good way to avoid that. Make sure you get a brand that says 'third party inspected' and molecularly distilled.
As far as diet, remember, saturated fats( which increase LDL), animal fats, are literally saturated and do not move as much through your veins. That is why they cause blockages to your heart/brain. At room temperature they are solid. Therefore in your body they can block up your veins if there is more of that than unsaturated, liquid. You need a lot of unsaturated fats to keep things flowing as well as EFA's(essential fatty acids/Omegas) are good for your brain, mood, cellular and hormone support. so try and keep your animal fats to a minimum and eat healthy versions: pure butter, free-range, antibiotic/hormone FREE meats of any kind; free range eggs etc...and increase your vegetables like broccoli, kale and leafy greens, good nuts (look up which are higher in EFA's, ie. walnuts) and whole grains which are good for lowering cholesterol because they provide ruffage to help keep bowels flowing...which taxes the liver less and the liver needs all the help it can get...so if your digestion is good and smooth, then your liver is less stressed and can perform better, thereby also helping with cholesterol.
I could go on but check this out further if you need to.
